Art show rolls out creativity for a good cause
Sandra Eckstein - Staff
Wednesday, April 19, 2006

This Sunday, people will be able to buy some great art while helping adults with disabilities.

The fifth annual Arts for Independence market is 11 a.m.-5 p.m. at the Marcus Institute near Emory University. More than 70 artists will show everything from paintings and pottery to folk art, jewelry and metal works.

The admission fees, donations and 25 percent of art sales will go to help the Zimmerman-Horowitz Independent Living Program, part of the Jewish Family & Career Services. It teaches adults with developmental disabilities independent living skills.

Lisa Morgan, director of the Disability Services Division of the program, said they recently expanded to include adults with physical disabilities.Kathy Mae Stalker, who has exhibited since its first year, said she likes it because it's for a great cause.

"Growing up, I had an aunt who received help from an organization like this, so I was immediately onboard," said Stalker, who paints whimsical animals with philosophical sayings. A popular one is a chick in a dinghy with the saying "Row your own boat."

Which is what it's all about.

Information: Tickets $10 or $18 for two. Children 18 and under free. 1920 Briarcliff Road. 770-677-9303, Ext. 5, or www.artsforindependence.org.
